Parkinson’s diseaseΒ  (PD) is a disease characterized by Β resting tremor, moving slower (bradykinesia), decreased facial expressions because of decreased facial movements (hypomimia), and often some cognitive impairment.Β  At this time there is no cure for PD, though there is growing excitement about new possibilities being researched. Most patients with PD have spent years managing their symptoms by continually altering and adjusting the traditional medications that have been available for decades.Β  The goal is to minimize tremor, reduce off periods and improvement movement.Β Most of these adjustments are temporary at best as the severity and characteristics of the symptoms change with the ongoing loss of dopamine containing cells.Β  Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has provided significant relief for many PD patients. DBS is a surgical procedure in which electrodes are implanted into specific areas of the brain to regulate abnormal electrical signals.Β DBS is also not a cure, but it can significantly reduce motor symptoms, allowing for reduction in medication doses.

A newer approach is now available which may be more effective than medication therapy and less invasive than DBS: High -Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive treatment that may reduce tremors associated with PD (as well as essential tremor in non-PD patients).Β  Immediate relief is experienced through creating a small lesion in the area of the brain causing the tremors (usually the thalamus in the brain) with focused ultrasound waves. Β The lesion interrupts the abnormal brain activity that causes tremor, possibly even eliminating them. HIFU is performed while the patient is inside an MRI to allow for precise targeting. Until a cure is found for PD, this procedure may be ideal for patients who don’t respond well to meds or experience too many side effects and for patients who do not want to undergo surgery.Β  There are no incisions or drilling into the skull which makes greatly reduces the risks of complications, such as bleeding or infection. Further, patients go home the same day.Β  There are potential temporary side effects, such as worsened balance or change in taste.

HIFU is indicated for patients with tremor-dominant PD.Β  With less tremors, PD patients can return to functioning more normally, such as eating, drinking and writing.Β  More study is needed to determine if there are any other unknown complications and how long the benefits last.
